Rust Claims Settlement Force Toyota to Set Aside 3.4 Billion
Rust Claims Settlement Force Toyota to Set Aside 3.4 Billion
Here is some information on a new issue with rusting/corroding on several Toyota models.
Toyota has set aside 3.4 billion to settle a federal class action lawsuit related to rusting frames. The lawsuits claim is that due to inadequate rust protection the vehicle's frames can corrode, ruining their structural integrity.
The affected models are:
2007-2008 Toyota Tundra
2005-2008 Toyota Sequoia
2005-2010 Toyota Tacoma
Toyota agreed to inspect vehicle frames for rust corrosion and replace the frame for free if necessary. The company also agreed to refund past maintenance and replacement costs.
The attorneys set the estimated value of frame replacement at $15,000 per vehicle. The actual cost to Toyota could be much lower depending on how many frames need to be replaced.
Toyota has admitted no liability or wrongdoing in the proposed settlement. Under settlement terms Toyota will inspect the vehicles for 12 years from the day they were first sold.

I am still also looking for Toyota’s remedy for the Takata airbag problem and will alert you with that information as soon as it becomes available.
Quick Links to Check for Vehicle Recalls
Several customers asked that I do a follow up on recalls and gathering up the links for all the car manufacturers. I will get back with you about the Takata airbag recall as soon as I hear anything more.
We know everybody doesn't own a Toyota or Lexus so I have included the links to the top 11 auto manufacturers. The Takata airbag was installed in most of these manufacturers models excluding Hyundai and Kia.
Often a recall can be very serious and possibly life threatening such as the Takata airbag recall that affects between 35 - 40 million vehicles. It's been several months since I was issued a Takata recall on my own car however Toyota has not offered a remedy as of yet. My current solution offered by Toyota is still “we recommend that you do not operate the vehicle with an occupant in the front passenger seat” That statement does nothing to comfort me about the state of my car. I will follow up with another email once I finally received word of a solution from Toyota.
There is no shortage of recall notices on most every vehicle, we just have to decide whether it is a serious problem or not. Often times recalls are more of a frivolous nature such as a recent recall because the lack of power window switch lubrication.
To check your vehicle for all recalls just enter in your VIN (17 characters and numbers ) ) located on your dashboard at the bottom of your driver's side windshield. These sites will tell you of the Takata recall or any other recalls that might be for your vehicles.

Toyota Wanted to Charge Me $12,000 for a New Engine
A big thanks for the great review by Mark U. on Yelp.com
Below is the direct quote from Mark U’s Yelp review.
"Toyota wanted to charge me $12,000 for a new engine - I took it to ToyoTechs and they were able to diagnose the issue as a spring in a cylinder saving me $11,000!!! The folks I have met so far have been customer service focused and fair on pricing. Thanks!! "

Great diagnosis and repair by Master Technician Bobby Hodges saving this customer $11,000
Pictured below is the broken spring and the replacement spring from the 2008 Sequoia. That spring is responsible for pulling the valve closed creating a sealed combustion chamber.
“Work done right, on time and at a fair price”
Toyota Cancels Scion Brand; ToyoTechs Will Service and Repair Scions for Many Years to Come
On February 3, 2016 Toyota killed off the Scion brand after 13 years. The good news is ToyoTechs will keep servicing the Scion brand for many years to come. Many of the Scion brand’s vehicles will be re-badged under the Toyota brand name. The FR-S sports car, iA sedan and iM 5-door hatchback will become Toyota models. Toyota will also cancel the Scion tc compact hatchback coupe
Scions fate seems to be directly tied to falling gas prices. With so many buyers moving back into the larger cars, crossovers and trucks the sales of Scions were less in 2015 than in 2014. It shares a commonality with the former Saturn brand, that GM launched in the early 90’s to attract younger buyers. It is was very difficult even with the strength of the Toyota name behind Scion to start up a new brand.
ToyoTechs has been working on Scion’s for many years and believes that having been built by Toyota that they are good sturdy vehicles that will run for a long time. We will continue to service and repair Scions for many years to come.
ToyoTechs wants you to comfortable with the knowledge that if Toyota build it (Scions and Lexus) we will be here to service and repair it.
